Writing Hartford Undergraduate Essay Prize Form

UConn's Sustainable Global Cities Initiative (SGCI) is proud to offer our third annual prize for writing produced by undergraduate students in 2021-22 UConn courses that engages with the city of Hartford. Please review the Guidelines to the right and then submit your entry via the form below. Contact Scott Campbell (scott.campbell@uconn.edu) with any questions.

    Eligibility

    • Open to work submitted by any UConn student
    • Submission must come from a course taken in fall of 2021 or spring of 2022
    • Can be submitted by faculty member or directly by student
    • Two categories: First-Year Writing (ENGL 1004, 1007, 1010, 0r 1011) and Undergraduate (open to all undergraduates regardless of year)

    Rules

    • Submission should engage with the city of Hartford (its people, places, or other city-related issues) in at least some tangible way
    • Priority will be given to original research and/or work that advances understanding about the city
    • Entries can include multimodal elements such as visual information, audio, and/or genres beyond that of the academic essay
    • Entry into this contest does not disqualify student from using the same piece for other UConn contests, such as the Aetna Writing in the Disciplines Awards or the Aetna First-Year Writing Award
    • One entry per student

    • defined and productive project
    • potential impact
    • creativity
    • rhetorical effectiveness

    Prizes

    • $100 for Best Undergraduate Submission (all students eligible)
    • $100 for Best First-Year Writing Submission (ENGL 1004, 1007, 1010, or 1011)

    Dates

    • Rolling entries will be accepted throughout 2021-2022 academic year.
    • Final Due Date for submissions is June 1, 2022
